Rooted in Peer Values. Stronger from the ground up.
excuse the mess as we build out our website.
Peer Rooted is being built around two areas of work: Peer Development and Organizational Consultation. Both are grounded in lived experience, person-centered practice, and the belief that meaningful support begins with dignity, choice, respect, and opportunities for continued growth.
Throughout her career, Tawnia has worked across behavioral health, substance use recovery, disability services, and community-based care. Her experience includes developing peer-led programs, supervising and mentoring peer and community-based professionals, facilitating professional training, building community partnerships, leading teams through significant growth, and creating the policies, training, and operational systems that support effective, sustainable services.
Through Peer Rooted, she brings this experience together to strengthen professional practice, support workforce development, and help organizations build services that reflect their values.

Tawnia Nelson turns complex needs into programs that work for the people who use them and the people who deliver them.
Peer Development
Your initial training teaches you the foundations of peer support. Then you begin working with people, and questions arise. How do you understand your role in a difficult moment? What do you do when you feel unsure? How do you keep growing without carrying the work alone?
Peer Rooted supports continued professional growth through peer coaching, approved supervision for Certified Peer Support Specialist Trainees, in-person training, and practical worksheets and guides. These opportunities encourage reflection, strengthen professional practice, and support peers as they navigate the realities of their work.
Through Peer Rooted Extended Learning, we’re also developing self-paced e-learning, a resource library, and future learning cohorts. As the program grows, we plan to explore additional resources for peer professionals considering independent practice.
Organizational Consultation
Strong services depend on strong operations. Peer Rooted is developing services for nonprofit and community-based organizations in behavioral health, substance use recovery, disability services, and related fields, helping align their programs, people, and daily operations with the values they promise to uphold.
Our initial focus includes professional supervision contracts for peer support staff, in-person workforce training, and practical resources that strengthen professional development and everyday practice.
As our consultation services expand, we will support organizations preparing for growth through program development, service design, and the policies and procedures needed to deliver services consistently. For organizations experiencing challenges such as staff turnover, unclear roles, communication breakdowns, or gaps between leadership decisions and frontline practices, we will help identify underlying issues and develop practical solutions.
Future consultation services may include organizational assessments, program design or redesign, reviews of participant access and experience, leadership and staff workflows, communication practices, and the development or revision of manuals, policies, and procedures. Our approach is rooted in peer values and applies across the organization, whether or not it operates a peer program.
For peers developing their practice. For organizations strengthening theirs.
